St. Nicholas Day and Gingerbread Cookies

Why do we celebrate St. Nicholas Day?

Autumn is nearly over and the festive season together with tasty recipes for gingerbread or Bredele cookies is around the corner. However, do you know that there is another feast before Christmas? Well-behaved children enjoy celebrating it a lot. Yes, we are talking about St. Nicholas Day!

St. Nicholas is a legendary figure believed to be based on Nicholas of Myra, who officiated as a bishop in the southern part of Turkey during the third century AD. Having resurrected three children, St. Nicholas was given the name of “protector of children” or “patron saint of schoolchildren”. In the north-eastern regions of France, but also in Belgium and Germany, St. Nicholas is as important as Santa Claus (whom he inspired a lot). He is accompanied by Le Père Fouettard (French for The whipping Father), a terrifying figure responsible for punishing children who have not behaved well.

St. Nicholas Day is celebrated annually on December 6. During this Feast children traditionally drink hot chocolate and eat mandarins, gingerbread, cookies or little brioche men, called Manalas or Mannele – depending on the location. The brioche men are of Germanic origin and mainly eaten in Alsace.
