Fried Apple Rings

The carnival season is followed by Easter time, a significant event in the Christian calendar. It is a period during which joy and sorrow alternate, and it all lasts until Easter Day, the day of joy and hope. Many people associate the carnival season particularly with fasting, doughnuts, carnival costumes and great children’s happiness.

Carnival traditions

The carnival season usually begins on Three Kings’ Day (6th January) and finishes on Shrove Tuesday.

Carnival parades and costumes

There are places where carnival is regarded as a very important event! It may last for days or even weeks, as is the case of Rio de Janeiro, Venice, Dunkirk and Quebec City.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all carnival festivities have been cancelled this year. However, it is still possible to enjoy this time and celebrate the festival at home.

Carnival pancakes

Shrove Tuesday is associated with eating traditional pancakes. According to a tradition, consuming eggs and butter was forbidden during the carnival season, and therefore, it was necessary to find a way to use them up before the carnival time began.

Similar carnival pastries, such as doughnuts and waffles, have their roots in that tradition, too. What these sweet treats have in common is their dough that can be either fried or baked.

There is a broad range of doughnut types: traditional, light, apple and also baked. Almost every country can be proud of its own recipe. To form a doughnut, you can use your hands or a round cookie cutter

Personally, I have tried out this tasty apple rings recipe and it was so delicious that I am going to make it soon again.

Ingredients for Fried Apple Rings:

4 Apples

1 Packet of Vanilla Sugar

1 Packet of Baking Powder

Oil for Frying + 1 tbsp. for the Dough

250 g Flour

200 ml Milk

2 Eggs

1 Pinch of Salt

Method: Fried Apple Rings

Put flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt into a large bowl. Form a hole in the middle and add 2 eggs and flower oil in it. Using a whisk, stir all the ingredients together. While stirring continuously, gradually add milk until you make the batter.

Using an apple peeler, peel 4 apples, remove the cores and cut the apples into rings. Heat up frying oil in a pan. Dip the apple rings in the prepared batter and fry each in the hot oil until both sides are golden brown. Be careful not to burn them. Remove apple rings from the pan and place each on a paper kitchen towel to get rid of the excess oil.

Mix powdered sugar with a packet of vanilla sugar, sprinkle the mixture over the fresh apple rings and serve immediately.
