Alsatian Nutty Shortbread Cookies

Alsace is a region in north-eastern France that is well known for its traditional Christmas Cookies – Bredele. Alsatian Bredele are baked especially during the Christmas period but they are perfect for any occasion! This recipe for Alsatian Nutty Shortbread Cookies is very simple and delicious in the same time!

 

 

Ingredients for Alsatian Nutty Shortbread Cookies:

 

100 g finely ground Walnuts

100 g Powdered Sugar 

270 g Butter

460 g Flour

2 Egg Yolks

1 Pinch of Cinnamon Powder

Zest of 1/2 lemon

1/2 tbsp. Baking Powder

For Decoration:

1 Egg Yolk

A few Nuts 

 

Method: Alsatian Nutty Shortbread Cookies

 

Mix walnuts and icing sugar together until homogenous. In another bowl, mix flour, lemon zest, baking powder, cinnamon and butter together until a sandy mixture is obtained. Then add the nut-sugar mixture and two egg yolks to the sandy mixture and knead into a dough. Let the dough rest in a cool place for about 3 hours.

 

Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough to a thickness of about 4-5 mm. Cut out the cookies with a circle-formed cookie cutter. Then arrange them on a baking sheet lined with baking paper and bake at 180 °C for about 10-12 minutes, leave to cool. 

 

Finally brush the baked cookies with egg yolk and decorate with nuts.
